Broadband Starvation

There is a worldwide epidemic today.

 Users are suffering and they are hurting for faster and more affordable Internet access.  Current conventional technologies and business models are not satisfying the hunger for high speed low cost broadband alternatives.    

Etherlinx's mission is to close the broadband starvation gap quickly and economically!


I.  Unlicensed Spectrum:  New Models are Emerging

Rapid deployment at low price points

EtherLinx™ design goal was to deliver a technology so that broadband could be deployed as fast as possible while satisfying the business model requirements of profitability for all the stakeholders investing in this common mission.

EtherLinx™ product design criteria:

  1. Rapid deployment of broadband everywhere AND
  2. Acceptable (Capital Expenditures / Revenue per subscriber) ratios

This new model pioneered by EtherLinx technology enables cost efficient delivery of broadband to markets that currently cannot receive broadband today - tier 1 cites where there is no DSL or Cable, and rural tier 2 and 3 cities where the incumbents aren't motivated to build out the facilities for broadband.


II.  A New Way of Thinking 

New Solutions for New Emerging Scenarios

The new model of broadband requires a new way of thinking, one that isn't constrained by old ways of thinking and old product models.  The new model isn't about retrofitting and recycling old technologies and policies for new scenarios or special hardware or propietary antennas.  It is about providing new innovative techniques from the ground up applied to new emerging models (e.g.. success of the unlicensed spectrum) and WiFi.


III.  Success of WiFi

WiFi success tells us that by creating a technology that puts innovation in the hands of technology firms and allowing computing power to be available to the people creates a new model for innovation.  WiFi's success is the beginning to what EtherLinx sees as the cure to the broadband starvation epidemic.

IV.  Success in the New Model

Success in the new model requires a technology that enables solutions that satisfy four (4) key dimensions: 

  1. Political
  2. Social
  3. Technological
  4. Economical

The next generation technologies must address ALL of these dimensions not just one or two of them.  This is what makes Etherlinx different!  We create solutions for all four dimension of the new model!


V.  Todays Dynamics and Challenges

Problem:  Broadband starvation

  • Users, businesses, children, and schools
  • Digital divide:  rural areas are at a social disadvantage because they don't have the advantage of having broadband in their lives
  • Education:  schools are in the need for cost effective and robust broadband access and the quality of education for children suffers due to the lack of innovation in getting schools connected
  • Economics:  current broadband technologies don't meet the economic requirements to motivate key stakeholders to invest in building out the facilities to provide the next generation utility of broadband computing.

Solution:  New enabling and cost effective technology that

  • Extends the success of WiFi instead of stunting it a birth
  • Putting broadband in the hands of mobile, home, school, and work users
  • Enables existing and new technology firms to innovation and create advancements that achieves the goal of closing the broadband starvation gap!
  • Profitable business model to motivate key stakeholders (WISP, entrepreneurs, and technology firms) to rapidly deploy robust extensible broadband capability to users, businesses, and schools.

Reality Today:  Internet users are suffering

  • Stalled advancement of broadband
  • Despite the speed of WiFi's development there are looming constraints that need to be adapted to continue its adoption.

VI.  Etherlinx Field Trials:  Over 10 years of operational deployments

Over the past 10 years EtherLinx has invested time and energy developing and deploying the EtherLinx broadband technology. Our goal from the beginning was to get our technology to deliver new functionality at the lowest cost points and then put it out in the market. 

  EtherLinx™ field trials have three phases:

  1. Operational
  2. Identify new business and technical models along the four dimensions:  Political, Social, Technical, and Economic
  3. Compile and finalize the best go to market strategy that meets our goal of rapidly deploying broadband capability.

EtherLinx is currently in phase four (IV) of production and deployment. We have successfully demonstrated the versatility and viability of our products and solutions in many areas and with a multitude of different applications. We are constantly researching and evaluating new business models that have emerged and that have not existed in the past. 

EtherLinx™ technology is breaking new ground in creating new opportunities and models while altering and disrupting current models and old technology approaches.


VII.  Low Cost Equipment: 

Our software approach allows for economical deployment of low cost and high performance base station and CPE configuration.  EtherLinx achieves this by using off the shelf 802.11 equipment and loading our Smart Spectrum advanced firmware on to the standard hardware.  Our Smart Spectrum software takes the inexpensive 802.11 hardware and increases the functionality.
